St. John’s, the capital and largest port and city of Antigua and Barbuda, has a population of 22,193.  It is the commercial center and the chief port of the island of Antigua.  The city is service-based, with tourism and government services representing the key sources of employment and income.

Antigua and Barbuda welcomed about 1.02 million tourists in 2017, up from 874 thousand tourists a year earlier.  The number of visitors staying at least 1 night or more increased by 1.9 percent.

The road is not well paved

The transport system includes both public and privately run services.  The most affordable option is the privately-owned minibusses.  Most buses have their routes posted in the front windows, and they’re usually privately owned mini-vans seating about 15 people.  Also, be prepared for a bumpy ride, because although Antigua’s main roads are paved, they are filled with potholes.

Planning to diversify the economy to help increase revenue

However, a series of violent hurricanes since 1995 resulted in serious damage to tourist infrastructure and periods of reductions in visitor numbers.

In 1999 the budding offshore financial sector was seriously hurt by financial sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom as a result of the loosening of its money-laundering controls.

To lessen its vulnerability to natural disasters, Antigua has been diversifying its economy.  Transportation, communications are becoming important.

Planning of adequate mass public transportation by 2030

Medium-term development strategy 2016 – 2020

Sustainable Development Dimensions include Adequate Infrastructure and Strong Tourism Industry.

It is significant congestion in St. John’s.  Irregular and sometimes infrequent mass public
transportation in the city.  It targets to reduced traffic congestion by 2020.

Action: Improve the inter-ministerial coordination necessary for the repositioning of
tourism.  The strategy will include connectivity – roads, ports, airports; aesthetics; transportation.

Business opportunity

The Automatic fare collection (AFC) system can bring good cash flow to the public transportation system as there are a deposit and unused value on each passenger card.  Every million passengers or tourists will contribute over US$ 1 million in cash flows based on our study.

Besides stopping fake money and driver’s fraud, the AFC system will bring in recurrent income from transaction fees. Every million passengers will bring US$ 5 million in income per year if the transaction fee is 5% based on our study.

Sustainable growth in public transportation development can be easily achieved.
